Website How to Guide

WordPress provides a broad range of features and functionality.   The basic WordPress functionality is also extended by a large collection of plugins that are developed by the WordPress development community.    This also a large collection of website themes that can be selected that provide the look and feel of the website.  We are using a theme called Canvas that was developed by a group called WooThemes.  The plugins and themes are described and downloadable on the WordPress website.

Some of the basic scenarios for updating the EHHS PTSO website are documented here.  This page is intended to only address the primary update scenarios and is not a comprehensive guide.

User Access

To update the website, you must have a user id that has permissions to do updates, and then signin to the website here using those credentials. If you don’t have the access you need, please reach out to the PTSO president listed on the The PTSO page, or to Eric Brown at eric_and_molly@hotmail.com.  There are several different user roles and permissions associated with each one:

  • Administrators have access to all the administration features.
  • Editors can publish posts, manage posts as well as manage other people’s posts, etc.
  • Authors can publish and manage their own posts, and are able to upload files.
  • Contributors can write and manage their posts but not publish posts or upload media files.
  • Subscribers can read comments/comment/receive newsletters, etc. but cannot create regular site content.

You may want to synchronize your initial password with your other online passwords.  To update your WordPress password:

  1. Hover over the Users link in the left nav area and select the Your Profile link.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the profile page, provide a new password and hit the Update Profile button.

Page Updates

To update the main content on a page (I.E., the main area of the page) on this website:

  1. Select Pages from the left navigation options
  2. Click on the page you want to update from the list presented in the main area of the page
  3. Edit the page content as needed
  4. Click on the Update button on the right (note, you can also preview your changes with the Preview Change button, also on the right)

Widget Updates

The EHHS PTSO pages all display the same set of small modules on the right hand side of the page.  These modules are referred to as widgets in the WordPress context.  The Upcoming Events and Contact widgets are basic text widgets.  The Links widget is a widget plug-in that is specifically designed to support entry of one to many links.  To update the content of a widget:

  1. Select the Appearance link from the left navigation options
  2. Click on the Widgets option
  3. The widgets in use by our site will be presented in the module labeled Primary on the right of the screen.
  4. Click on the down arrow icon to get into edit mode for the widget
  5. Make your updates and then click the Save button
  6. Reclick the arrow icon or click the close link to exit out of edit mode on the widge

Note, the links widget provides instructions on how to edit link content.  The contact widget is HTML that will format the contact information.  Content for an existing contact can be made by updating the text within the <td></td> HTML tags.  To add a new contact, just copy and paste an existing contact from <td> to </td>, and then update the text as needed.

Navigation

The primary navigation bar in the top area of the website is setup and maintained via the Appearance option in the left nav area. Select the Menus options link on the Appearance tab.  If you have setup a new page and want that page to be accessible directly via the primary navigation, then select that page from the Pages modules and click on the Add to Menu button in that module.  If you want a page to be a secondary menu option, then drag it to the right in the Primary Nav Menu module on that same page.  Just look at the existing nagivation setup in the module to get an idea.

To adjust the look and feel of the primary navigation bar:

  1. Go to the Canvas menu option and select the Theme Options link.
  2. Select the Layout option from the list of options that are displayed in the WooThemes module.
  3. Select the Primary Navigation option.
  4. Update background, selected, and hoover options as desired and click the Save All Changes button.

Links

To insert a hyperlink in text on a main page:

  1. Select the text you’d like to be the link.
  2. Click on the Insert/Edit Link icon in the editor toolbar.  A modal dialogue window will be displayed.
  3. If you want to link to another page on the EHHS PTSO website then just select the target page from the list on the bottom of the dialogue window.
  4. If you want to link to a page that is external to the website, then provide that URL in the URL text box and provide a title that will be displayed when the link is hovered over.  There is also a checkbox to indicate whether the target page should be brought up in a new window.  Checking this box is the standard on our site for external links.  I.E., the PTSO website will remain as is in the existing window, and a new browser window or tab will be launched to display the target content.

Plugins

WordPress has a large collections of plugins available to extent the functionality of the basic WordPress platform.  Scroll to the Plugins link in the left nav area and then select the Installed Plugins link to view the plugins that are currently installed.  To add a new plugin, select the Add New link from the Plugins menu and then search the plugins list.  There are thousands of available plugins provided by outside developers and organization.  Any plugin that is added then needs to be activated.

Footer Updates

To customize the footer area:

  1. Go to the Canvas menu option and select the Theme Options link.
  2. Select the Footer Customisation option from the list of options that are displayed in the WooThemes module.
  3. Provide customization as desired and click the Save All Changes button.

Custom CSS

To provide custom CSS styling:

  1. Go to the Canvas menu option and select the Theme Options link.
  2. Select the Display Options link.
  3. Add or modify CSS code in the Custom CSS box as desired

Note, custom CSS is currently used to position the EHHS logo in the right of the header area.

Graphics

To add a new graphic (or other file) to the website:

  1. Hover over the Media link in the left nav area and select the Add New option.
  2. Click the Select Files link, browse your machine, and then select the desired graphic for upload.
  3. After upload, the graphic can be customized by clicking on it in the media library and then doing any desired updates (add a caption, alt text, etc).  You can also click the Edit Image button on that page, then the Scale Image button to adjust the pixels dimensions of the image.

Tables

Basic WordPress doesn’t seem to support tables for data formatting.   In the editor, you can paste in a table that’s been setup in a full-fledged word processor, and you can also use the text view to manually code an HTML table.   A nice table editor plugin called TablePress has been added to our WordPress installation.  With this plugin, a new table is defined by hovering over the TablePress link in the left nav, and then clicking on the Add New Table link.   After defining the table on the first screen by providing table name and numbers of rows/columns, you’ll get a second screen where you can enter the actual table data.   After creating a table using this plugin, you can then add it to a page or side module
